The CNLA and Garden Centres Canada have compiled the results
of the organization’s annual survey of garden centre members. Overall the data
compiled confirms that the majority of businesses are now open for almost 12
months of the year. Highlights from the survey also include:

- The average dollar sale per customer has increased
from $77.74 (in 2007) to $98.76 (in 2008) to $108.42 (in 2009).
- 72 per cent of garden centre members indicated an
increase of five per cent in their customer count.
- 22 per cent of respondents reported a 5 to 10 per
cent increase in profits in 2009.
- 84 per cent of garden centre members operate
websites. The number of businesses looking to capitalize on sales from
e-commerce is growing from 10 per cent in 2008 to 18 per cent in
- Average labour expense for most garden centres is
around 15 per cent.
- The majority of people said the greatest challenge
for the year 2009 was the uncertainty of the economic situation and controlling
costs. For 2010, members are looking to increase sales, keep their sales even
with 2009 and stay focused on growing their sales.
