New Varieties - Nov/Dec 05

New Varieties

Written by Canadian Garden Centre
New Varieties 1. ABELIA GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
A bright golden variegated selection of ‘Compacta.’ Colourful and compact with good stability. Would be a eye popping merchandising endcap display when sold with Abelia Silver Anniversary™. Reaches a mature height of 3 feet and hardy to Zone 6. For best colour, plant in full sun or partial shade. For more information, visit www.provenwinners.com.

2. Alternanthera ‘red threads’
‘Red Threads’ features beautiful, deep burgundy-coloured foliage that’s almost grass-like with its narrow leaves. It forms a dense mound that grows 6 to 9 inches tall. A fantastic companion with lighter coloured foliage and flowers. And, as a true Athens Select variety, it’s clean of potentially harmful viruses and will perform exceptionally well all season, easily withstanding heat and humidity. Best grown in 4" pots and used as edging or in mixed containers.
For more information, visit www.athensselect.com.

3. Forsythia show off
Covered with abundant, large, golden flowers and dark green foliage. A compact, rounded plant with a full and showy flower display from the ground up. Developed by Minier Nursery of France. Zone 3 and reaching a mature height of 3 to 6 feet. Beautiful cut flower and does best in full sun. For more information, visit www.provenwinners.com.

4. Alternanthera ‘Summer flame’
Unlike the grass-like foliage of ‘Red Threads,’ ‘Summer Flame’ features broader foliage, more like that of ‘Gail’s Choice’ in shape and growth habit. But it’s the multi-coloured foliage that’ll set your summer colour program ablaze. With bright pink, white, and green variegation, ‘Summer Flame’ perks up any plant combination in the landscape and containers. A kaleidoscope of colour from spring through fall! This plant combines perfectly with Duranta ‘Cuban Gold.’ For more information, visit www.athensselect.com.

5. kolkwitz dream catcher
Beauty Bush is spectacular in bloom, but goes into hiding for the rest of the year. This is no longer the case with this new specimen with golden yellow foliage. For best performance, plant it in filtered or partial shade. Also unique to this variety is its splendid golden-orange fall colour. Mature height of 6 to 9 feet and hardy to Zone 4.  For more information, visit www.provenwinners.com.

6. hydrangea cityline series
Tired of floppy, weak-stemmed hydrangeas, especially at the time of shipping? Cityline is the answer. Developed by Franz-Xaver Rampp of Europe, where growth regulators are prohibited. Growers are able to finish a tight, full plant without chemicals, shearing or pruning off flower buds. Large flowers with vivid colours, strong stems and dark glossy foliage characterize these new German hybrids. Also noted for excellent mildew resistance. Cityline creates a knockout one gallon! Four varieties in the series. Mature height of 1 to 3 feet and hardy to Zone 5. Does well in partial shade to full sun.  For more information, visit www.provenwinners.com.

7. weigela fine wine
The next generation of Wine & Roses with the same great dark burgundy foliage, but with a compact mounded habit similar to Spiraea japonica. It’s a refined plant with smaller leaves, abundant pink flowers and excellent texture. A great plant for the front of the border, the perennial bed, or used as a low foundation plant. Reaching a mature height of 2 feet and hardy to Zone 5. Best in full sun. For more information, visit www.provenwinners.com.
