The Atlanta-based company already operates 138 stores across Canada.

“We have stuck to our strategy of providing innovative and exciting products, creating a fun place to shop and employing the most knowledgeable associates in the country because that’s what our customers want,” says company president Annette Verschuren.

The Canadian division of Home Depot produced revenues of $5.5 billion in 2005. It employs about 26,000 people across the country. The expansion announcement comes as the company prepares for the entry of another U.S.-based competitor into the Canadian market. Lowe’s Companies Ltd. announced last June that it planned to open six to 10 stores in the Toronto market in 2007.

Canadian-based competitors in the home improvement field also include Rona Inc. and Canadian Tire.
